More than 150,000 people nationwide attended Tropfest, a highly anticipated short-film festival in Australia created by John Polson. Actor Damon Gameau (seen in the Australian film Balibo) won Tropfest with his animated film Animal Beatbox. The film was voted in by some of the film industry’s most respected, including well-known director Bruce Beresford, Olivia Newtown-John, Aussie favourite Jack Thompson, Twilight heartthrob Xavier Samuel, director Stephan Elliott, Animal Kindgom producer Liz Watts and Tropfest Founder and Director John Polson. Surprise judge actor Joseph Fiennes weighed in live from Spain before casting his vote online.
Ausfilm will set up meetings for Gameau in LA in the coming months to help further his filmmaking career.
The competition is taken very seriously and is considered the winner’s ticket to a successful career in film or television. Notable alumni include filmmakers such as Alister Grierson, Rowan Woods, Clayton Jacobson, Nash Edgerton, Peter Carstairs, Rob Carlton, Sam Worthington, Robert Connolly, Leon Ford, Justin Drape, Tim Bullock and Elissa Down.
