Deluxe's Efilm - Totally Stoked for Storm Surfers 3D

Deluxe Australia’s 3D creative and technical excellence has been acknowledged after Storm Surfers 3D was awarded Most Outstanding Achievement in a 3D Documentary 2012 earlier this month. The production received the highest accolade on the international stage at the International 3D Society’s 4th Awards Ceremony held in Los Angeles.

The Australian surf documentary also accepted the Best Feature Length Documentary at the AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) awards the week prior. The documentary follows two best friends on their adventure to discover and ride Australia’s largest and most terrifying waves.

Deluxe EFilm’s post production team utilised revolutionary technology to produce Storm Surfers 3D. The team worked with Producers, Marcus Gillezeau and Ellenor Cox of Firelight Productions and their experienced camera crew to transform 1500 hours of stereo footage into a multi-platform feature film, four-part television series, 2D and 3D webisode series and game over an eight month period.

Storm Surfers 3D was EFilm Sydney’s first stereoscopic production which was shot entirely in 3D and captured on six different camera types; a fresh challenge for the experienced Sydney-based post team.

EFilm equipped themselves to tackle the project by designing a tailored workflow that utilised SGO’s state-of-the-art grading system, Mistika. The use of Mistika complemented the high-end facilities already housed at Deluxe’s studios in Sydney and Melbourne.  The combined Digital Intermediate and stereo 3D system is the cutting-edge industry standard for stereoscopic alignment and a must on any stereo 3D production.

SGO welcomed feedback throughout production and troubleshooting happened in real time to improve the software, allowing the video footage to be perfected. The innovative technical success of the post production team combined with Deluxe’s world-class facilities and suites to colour grade, edit and quality control the content resulted in a breathtaking experience for the films’ audience - it is a testament to the skill and precision of Deluxe’s talent pool.

“Working with the Deluxe EFilm team was without doubt one of the best collaborations I’ve enjoyed as a producer. The project was technically extremely demanding and complex and we needed to resolve a lot of issues that are inherent with pushing the limits in 3D”, said Producer Marcus Gillezeau.

The knowledge and development gained about the intricacies of 3D film production has put the Deluxe Australia in good stead for future 3D projects and reflects the teams’ ability to be agile with clients’ requirements and complete projects to the highest standards.
