Originally from Brazil, Luane’s adaptability and passion for helping others have made her a valuable asset to the team at Village Roadshow Studios. Raised by a powerhouse woman herself, Luane’s mother instilled in her the values of hard work and determination, which have shaped her career path and approach to life. In our Q&A with Luane, she shares insights into her role at VRS, her passions, and how she stays grounded as well as the importance of strong women paving the way for future generations.

Can you tell us about your role as Executive Operations Assistant at Village Roadshow Studios and how long you’ve been at Village?

I describe myself as the go-to person for production crew, tenants, team members and contractors. I’ve been working in the Studios for two and a half years and each day is a new learning experience and a chance to streamline procedures. My role is multifaceted, I support the team to ensure everything is running smoothly for productions and tenants, I attend to operational, maintenance and administrative demands and provide valuable support to Lynne, our Studio President. 

The aspects of my role that ensure VRS runs smoothly vary broadly. They include operational oversight to ensure security measures are followed, stakeholder communications, production pre-, shoot and wrap procedures and inspections. I also look after marketing, finances, coordination with contractors, team members and production to ensure everything goes according to schedule; including staff training, OHS procedures, reporting and updating our records.

How did you come into your role at Village?

I was already a VRTP (Village Roadshow Theme Parks) team member when I saw the opportunity at the Studios and applied. At the time I hadn’t worked in film, however, I do have a skill set from a varied background, working with supply chain, human resources, accounting, civil/naval projects and hospitality, my experience and adaptability made me a good fit for the dynamic role.

Village Roadshow Studios has hosted many major productions over the years. Can you share a memorable experience/s you’ve had while working on one of these productions?

The most memorable experience was when Elvis was being produced at the Studios. It was my first contact with the film industry, and I had the opportunity to enter all the sound stages and see most of the sets. It blew my mind how much work and dedication goes into making a feature film.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your day-to-day work and how do you overcome them?

The film industry is so dynamic, things are constantly changing and the demands vary from one day to another, it can be a challenge to navigate it all. However, when you work as a team, think on your toes and have a sense of prioritising your time, it makes it easier to accommodate everything.

As a woman working in the film industry, have you faced any unique challenges or obstacles in your career? If so, how have you overcome them?

Although I am working in a field that is male-dominated, I’m fortunate that I haven’t encountered any notable challenges as a woman working in this industry. I’ve only worked in film over the past few years and I’m thankful to the women before me who have done the hard work in making the working environment a positive place for women. Our Studio President, Lynne Benzie is a strong woman and I’m sure she is a major reason that I am comfortable in the work that I do here.

Can you tell us about any exciting projects currently in development or production at Village Roadshow Studios?

We are currently working on Apples Never Fall from Matchbox and there is one more production ramping up that is a secret for the meantime.

Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies or interests? How do you balance your personal life with the demands of your job?

I’m a hiker and nature-lover, so if I’m not at work, you will probably find me out chasing peaks, sunsets and waterfalls or in the air practising Aerial Silks.  

I believe everyone should have their non-negotiables and mine is to wake up early, exercise and meditate before going to work. It helps me feel that I have accomplished a duty within myself and it sets my energy for the working day ahead.

What women have inspired you throughout your life and career, and why?

It might sound like a cliché, but my mum is my biggest inspiration. She was a mum noticeably young and with two kids to look after, she managed to work and pursue her degree simultaneously. From there she built a renowned and inspiring career as a psychologist, never stopped studying, working on different projects with the community and giving speeches advocating women’s empowerment and mental health. She is passionate about her profession and the lives she changed over the years.   

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Patagonia is for sure number one on my bucket list. I love mountains and Patagonia is a hiking playground of exuberant landscapes and imposing mountains.

What is your favourite movie of all time, and why?

Tricky question! I don’t have a specific favourite movie, but if I must pick one that inspires me and brings a feeling of freedom and adventure, it would be Into the Wild by Sean Penn.
